ROLE: Senior Design Engineer,

(Switchgear & Power Distribution)

Position Summary

The Senior Design Engineer will provide technical leadership in the design, development, and documentation of low- and medium-voltage switchgear and power distribution systems. The role will also provide technical guidance and mentorship to engineers, support project execution, and contribute to engineering standards and continuous improvement initiatives.

The position is responsible for ensuring engineering designs meet customer requirements, applicable industry standards, and MCM quality standards.

The role also supports the Quality Management System (QMS) by ensuring processes deliver intended outcomes, maintaining QMS integrity, promoting customer focus, and identifying opportunities for improvement.

Requirements & qualifications

Key Responsibilities

  • Technical Leadership & Mentorship
  • Serve as a technical resource and mentor for Design Engineers and Engineering Interns.
  • Provide guidance on complex design challenges, protection schemes, control circuits, and customer requirements.
  • Conduct peer reviews of engineering deliverables prepared by less experienced engineers.
  • Review engineering deliverables for technical accuracy, completeness, and compliance with company standards.
  • Support engineering training and knowledge-sharing initiatives.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining engineering standards, templates, procedures, and best practices.
  • Provide technical leadership and guidance throughout project execution.
  • Advanced Design Engineering
  • Lead the design and development of complex electrical switchgear and power distribution systems.
  • Develop general requirements, elevation and plan views, one-line diagrams, schematics, and control circuits.
  • Select and specify electrical components based on project requirements, application, coordination, and compliance requirements.
  • Create and revise engineering drawings using CAD software, including AutoCAD and AutoCAD Electrical.
  • Ensure designs comply with applicable standards, including IEC, ANSI, UL, IEEE, and NEMA.
  • Review and interpret customer specifications, contracts, technical drawings, procedures, and manuals.
  • Provide technical input during customer submittal, production, testing, commissioning, and post-shipment phases.
  • Participate in customer technical review meetings and provide engineering expertise during project execution.
  • Support the resolution of technical issues during manufacturing, testing, commissioning, and post-shipment activities.
  • Collaborate with mechanical designers, project managers, manufacturing teams, and other internal stakeholders.
  • Project Management & Continuous Improvement
  • Independently manage complex engineering projects with minimal supervision.
  • Evaluate technical alternatives and make sound engineering decisions.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvement, standardization, and engineering efficiency.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives within the engineering department.
  • Maintain accuracy, thoroughness, organization, and attention to detail while managing multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Define problems, collect and interpret data, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, and implement effective solutions in a timely manner.
  • Quality Management System Responsibilities
  • Ensure the Quality Management System conforms to ISO 9001:2015 requirements.
  • Ensure engineering processes are delivering their intended outcomes.
  • Report to Top Management on QMS performance and opportunities for improvement.
  • Identify QMS change requirements and opportunities for innovation.
  • Promote a customer-focused approach throughout engineering activities.
  • Ensure the integrity of the QMS is maintained during changes and project execution.
  • Ensure engineering activities comply with applicable company quality standards and customer requirements.

Qualifications & Experience

The successful Senior Design Engineer will have:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering preferred, or a related engineering discipline.
  • 7+ years of experience in switchgear or power distribution equipment design.
  • Advanced technical expertise in low- and medium-voltage electrical systems, up to 38kV.
  • Advanced knowledge of electrical protection and control systems.
  • Demonstrated experience leading complex projects from concept through manufacturing and testing.
  • Experience reviewing and approving engineering deliverables.
  • Experience mentoring, training, or providing technical guidance to engineers.
  • Experience with AutoCAD and AutoCAD Electrical.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and related Microsoft software.
  • Knowledge of applicable electrical standards, including IEC, IEEE, UL, NEMA, ANSI, and related standards.
  • Hands-on experience in switchgear manufacturing, testing, commissioning, or field service is preferred.

  • Work Environment

Work arrangement: On-site.

Remote work may be permitted only with management approval based on a major life change.

Work schedule: 40 hours per week.

Willingness to work approximately 10% overtime as needed.

Travel is not required for this position.

The position operates with a high degree of autonomy and technical authority.

The successful candidate is expected to independently manage complex projects while providing guidance and support to other engineers.
