Job description

We are seeking a qualified Registered Nurse First Assist (RNFA) to support the surgical team during the intra-operative phase of surgical care within the Northwest Surgical Services region.

The RNFA works closely with surgeons, anesthesia, circulating nurses, scrub personnel, and other healthcare professionals to provide advanced nursing care throughout pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative stages.

Requirements & qualifications

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist surgeons across multiple surgical specialties under the direction of the attending surgeon.
  • Perform pre-operative patient assessment and evaluation.
  • Provide technical assistance during surgical procedures in accordance with AORN standards, Oregon regulations, and facility protocols.
  • Provide surgical exposure and assist with tissue handling.
  • Clamp, cut, ligate, and handle tissue as directed by the surgeon.
  • Perform suturing and provide hemostasis as directed.
  • Assist with patient positioning, preparation, prepping, catheterization, shaving, and draping.
  • Assist anesthesia during induction.
  • Participate in surgical briefings and time-out procedures.
  • Assist with room preparation, equipment setup, and surgical instrumentation.
  • Monitor counted items on the sterile field and identify breaks in sterile technique.
  • Assist with patient transport and transfers to and from the operating room table.
  • Apply dressings and secure drainage tubes.
  • Assist with post-operative patient transfer and positioning.
  • Support room turnover and tear-down in collaboration with the circulating nurse and scrub person.
  • Review patient charts and pertinent clinical information.
  • Provide pre- and post-operative patient education when designated.
  • Maintain a safe and efficient surgical environment.
  • Participate in regional on-call coverage for elective, urgent, and emergent surgical cases.

Requirements

  • Current Oregon Registered Nurse (RN) License.
  • Minimum 2 years of peri-operative scrubbing and circulating experience in a KP OR, or 1 year of RNFA experience inside or outside KP.
  • Successful completion of an AORN-recognized RNFA program meeting applicable AORN education standards.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Nurse Operating Room Certificate.
  • Meet all RNFA qualifications outlined in the AORN Position Statement.
  • Maintain CNOR and RN licensure with required continuing education.
  • Ability to practice within the limits of preparation, experience, licensure, and facility policies.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Minimum 2 years of experience practicing as an RNFA.
  • CRNFA certification preferred.
  • ACLS certification preferred/required upon hire or transfer as applicable.
  • Strong knowledge of surgical procedures, instrumentation, sterile technique, and RNFA clinical practices.
  • Ability to work effectively with surgeons and multidisciplinary operating-room teams.
